I took a different approach for both of these drawings. The first one was the dot one. I did the dots as an underpainting for the rest of the piece. I pulled different abstract colors to give a sense of skin and then put flesh tones on top of those once they had dried.
With the Van Gogh piece I was really inspired by his self portraits. I loved how loose the brush strokes were, but once put all together they were tight and fine. I was also inspired by some of his abstract work, hence the colors of the hair. I half and half on this piece. I used watercolors instead, so I don’t think the same effect was accomplished in the skin, but I like the hair.
